Cowboy Slate

Pictures taken on 04/29/2007:

Name: Cowboy

Cowboy was hatched on July 01, 1996 and hand raised at 21 days.

He has two other siblings from the same clutch.

Cowboy is a surgically sexed male Congo African Grey parrot.

His favorite foods are: whatever you happen to be eating, apples, strawberries, nuts (any), seeds (any), birdy bread, birdy omelets, pellets, jello, popcorn. He dunks just about every dry food we give him in his water bowl first before eating it.

His favorite drinks are: whatever you happen to be drinking, orange juice, carrot juice, vegetable juice, iced tea and anything with ice cubes, warm tea and warm drinks.

His favorite music is: pop, classical music, country and western, soft music, cartoons and commercials.

He loves to play and dive bomb his toys, fly around looking for more toys, and dump things.

He speaks English: "take a shower", "I love you", "baby birds", "hold on", "Ralph", "hello", "cowboy", "water", "papa bird", "William", "What", "open the door", "drink milk", "food", "toy".

He speaks Spanish: "becho", "sacate", "perro", "agua", "cacahuates", "Blanca", "te hecho agua", "ten".

He does many imitations: microwave and other beeps, phones ringing, police sirens, water and drinking, metal snaps, glass clinking, cup sounds, sneezes, burps, barking, wild birds esp. crows, baby talk, tongue clicks, and always seems to be picking up something new.

He whistles: musical whistles, wolf whistles, calls and responds to unique whistles my wife and I have taught him. He has very keen eyesight and hearing.

He answers questions: always "what sound does this or that make?" For example: water, kisses, baby birds, horses, and dogs. He knows the associated sound, and makes the correct sound when asked.

He has unlocked, opened, closed and locked all the doors on his bird cage both from the inside and the outside. Has been known to open the doors from the outside and pull out the bowls.

He has learned how to pull out drawers to get at all the good toys inside.

He is especially cute in the morning when he first wakes up or late at night when he's tired. He loves to be scratched and will tolerate petting. He's very tolerant of being kissed on the beak, and he will kiss you and groom you if he likes you.

He has always had his feathers, been able to fly, and has developed into a highly skillful indoor aviator over the years. He is usually out of his cage and free to roam around inside the house most of the day as long as there is someone around to watch him.

He loves to play, but will also defend his territory. It's pretty risky to get between him and his food, or to try to take food away from him while he's eating as I have seen my wife do a couple of times. When you're playing with him he will grab you and bite you, but be careful not to hurt you.
